What the Datasheet Can Tell You - and What It Cannot

A technical datasheet can describe material and laboratory properties, but it cannot answer every field-use question. Warning tape specifications should be read as evidence about a defined construction, not as a guarantee of performance under every installation condition.

Film thickness describes construction, not hazard severity

Above-ground PE warning ribbon may use film options in a typical range of roughly 50-200 micrometres, while buried warning products may be specified in mil-based grades or laminated constructions. When comparing polyethylene warning tape thickness, first confirm whether the value refers to an above-ground ribbon, a non-detectable buried film or a detectable laminate.

Thicker film may improve handling or resistance to certain forms of tearing, but it does not automatically make a tape more appropriate. Span length, wind, fixing method, print area, exposure period and project requirements still control the decision.

Tensile data needs the test method beside it

ASTM D882 is a recognized method for evaluating tensile properties of thin plastic sheeting. A warning tape tensile strength value should be read together with thickness, specimen direction, dimensions, conditioning and test settings. Machine-direction and transverse-direction values can differ, so supplier data should be compared only when the underlying test conditions are sufficiently similar.

Higher elongation is not automatically better. A polyethylene film that stretches substantially before break may survive a short tensile test yet narrow, sag or distort its printed legend if over-tensioned between posts.

Readability is a site question as well as a print question

3. Review tensile and elongation in context

Where mechanical handling matters, request ASTM D882 data or another agreed method and check units, specimen direction and film construction. Use the values to compare like-for-like grades rather than unrelated product families.

4. Run a limited application trial

Install a representative length in the actual or simulated work environment and observe sag, twisting, fixing-point tearing, print readability, unwind behaviour, moisture and temperature effects over the trial period.
