Two Color Systems That Should Never Be Mixed

Start with the Signal Word

Above-ground barricade tape is a high-visibility visual warning for temporary hazards, restricted areas, maintenance zones, and controlled access. Its color should be read with the signal word, hazard severity, entry restriction, and site procedure.

Under ANSI Z535.5, Danger uses safety white on safety red, Warning uses black on safety orange, Caution uses black on safety yellow, Notice uses white on safety blue, and Safety Instructions uses white on safety green. The system communicates relative severity and required attention; it is not the same as an underground service-identification chart.

OSHA guidance also requires a readable signal word and major message. State the condition or required action instead of relying on “CAUTION” or “DANGER” alone.

A red film printed with a small black “CAUTION” legend may be visually strong but inconsistent with a project system that reserves red for Danger. Artwork review should check the signal word, background color, text contrast, and governing standard as one layout rather than approving each element separately.

For temporary work-zone boundaries, above-ground barricade tape options may be tied or fixed to posts, cones, railings, fencing, or frames. Film thickness, tape width, span length, fixing method, wind exposure, and inspection frequency should match the site rather than being selected from color alone.

Does APWA alone define a buried warning tape specification?

The difference between detectable and non-detectable warning tape is the locating structure, not the utility color code. Non-detectable PE tape provides a visual warning when excavation reaches it. The test set should follow the expected failure mode. Above-ground barricade tape needs checks for mechanical handling, print durability, and readability. Buried visual tape needs legend accuracy and continuous placement. Where Correct Colors Still Fail on Site

The first failure is applying one color system to another. Yellow can support an above-ground Caution message yet identify a buried gas route; even the correct base color can misidentify the asset when the service legend or governing requirement is wrong.

A third error is selecting a detectable product without a field acceptance method. Metallic foil can be cut, isolated at roll changes, folded, or incompatible with the proposed locating setup. An integrated wire can lose continuity at a splice even though the printed film remains visually intact.
