Barricade Tape Color Code Guide: OSHA Meanings and Safety Applications

The barricade tape color code should be reviewed with the signal word, hazard severity, printed message, PE or LDPE film structure, and installed condition. This guide applies to non-adhesive tape used for temporary work-zone identification. Reference data support comparison, but final color alignment, readability, tear behavior, print retention, and span stability should be confirmed with an approved sample and a representative field trial.

Start with the Hazard Message, Not the Film Color

OSHA does not provide one universal chart for every plastic barricade tape. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.144 assigns red to danger-related identification and yellow to caution and selected physical hazards. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.145 and its appendix address signal words and recommended tag colors, while ANSI Z535.5 provides a broader framework for temporary safety tags and barricade tapes.

Select the signal word and hazard message before selecting the film color. DANGER, WARNING, and CAUTION are not interchangeable. Letter size, contrast, language, approach direction, and supporting controls determine whether the restriction can be understood.

This guide covers above-ground, non-adhesive printed PE or LDPE tape. It excludes underground utility color systems, detectable tape, adhesive floor marking, reflective vehicle tape, permanent signs, guardrails, fall protection, and lockout or tagout. Three Layers Must Be Released Together

Release approval should cover three connected layers.

  • Hazard communication: the signal word, specific message, language, and letter height must match the risk and site procedure.
  • Visible construction: the film, base color, opacity, surface treatment, ink, contrast, and print repeat must keep the warning recognizable.
  • Field stability: thickness, width, edge quality, fixing method, span, tension, and exposure determine whether the message stays visible and correctly oriented.

Pulling, Stretching, and Tearing Are Different Failures

Thickness is not a stand-alone strength grade. Support shape, edge damage, span, temperature, and tension can still control failure. Tensile strength describes controlled pulling resistance; elongation describes deformation before rupture. Excessive stretch can narrow the tape and distort the warning. Propagation tear measures how a cut or staple hole grows. Review thickness, MD and TD tensile data, elongation, and tear behavior together.

Installation Geometry Changes the Result

Rounded posts, cones, fencing, painted rails, sharp metal edges, rough masonry, and timber load the film differently. Long unsupported spans increase sag and wind twisting. Excessive tension concentrates stress at knots or clips; low tension can lower the message below the intended sight line. Include support spacing, height, entry openings, and approach direction in the trial.

Release the Sample in Three Checks

  • Bench release: confirm the signal word, spelling, colors, dimensions, print repeat, winding, edge quality, and ink condition.
  • Installed-span release: use the intended supports, fixing method, height, span, and tension. Check readability, sag, twist, edge damage, and tie-point tearing.
  • Exposure release: when relevant, inspect after 24 h, 72 h, or a project-justified 7-day interval. Record weather, color change, ink transfer, moisture response, softening, brittleness, and retained readability.

Peel behavior, edge lifting, bubbles, adhesive trace, and residue apply only when adhesive tabs or an adhesive-backed variant contact a surface. Test those components separately on the actual glass, metal, plastic, paint, or coating.

Storage History Belongs on the Test Record

Store rolls in original packaging in a cool, dry, shaded area away from heaters, condensation, direct sunlight, and chemicals. Avoid crushed cores, unsupported piles, and excessive stacking pressure. Transport heat, vibration, and damaged cartons can cause telescoping, edge dents, loose winding, or ink setoff. Record the production lot, storage period, carton condition, transport history, and pre-test conditioning.

FAQ

Does OSHA define one complete barricade tape color code?

No. OSHA provides selected safety-color and sign or tag requirements. Other relationships may come from recommended standards and site rules. The signal word, hazard message, and required physical controls still need confirmation.

What is the difference between red DANGER tape and yellow CAUTION tape?

Red DANGER identification is associated with a more severe or immediate hazard. Yellow CAUTION identification warns of a possible hazard or unsafe practice. Final use must follow the applicable site procedure.

Is a typical value a guaranteed acceptance limit?

No. A project limit needs an agreed test method, conditioning, sampling plan, tolerance, and approval record.
